God reserves to Himself the right to take vengeance, or be
revenged on His enemies on His own behalf or on behalf of
His Children (see Deuteronomy 32:35; Psalm 94:1; Hebrews 10:30).
Only in the case of murder was a man of Israel expected to
take vengeance by killing the murderer (see Numbers ch.35).
Jesus changed this law completely by asking God to forgive
his murderers (see Luke 23:34), as also did Stephen (in Acts
7:60), leaving an example for us. Christians are expected
to endure wrongs against them, and not to seek revenge: "
those
who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves
to their faithful Creator and continue to do good." (1
Peter 4:19).
"Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for
God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will
repay,' says the Lord." (Romans 12:19; and see Hebrews
10:30).
"Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with
good." (Romans 12:21; and see previous verses in the
chapter).
