RABBI
R

The word is found in the Old Testament as a prefix to the titles of the chief men of the kings of Assyria and Babylon, where it indicates the meaning of 'chief'. In the NIV in 2 Kings 18:17 we read: "The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer and his field commander…." In the KJV we find "And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh…", literally his chief eunuch and chief cup-bearer. Similarly in Jeremiah 39:3 we read that on another occasion the princes of Babylon, including Rabmag (the chief magician), came and sat in the gate of Jerusalem.

In the New Testament 'Rabbi' had become a title of respect given to the teachers of the Law, with the meaning of 'teacher' or 'master', and it has continued in this use in Jewish communities to the present day. Jesus was critical of the pretentious pride of the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, and he warned his disciples not to copy them:

"…they love to be greeted in the market-places and to have men call them 'Rabbi'. But you are not to be called 'Rabbi', for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father', for you have one Father, and He is in heaven. Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one teacher, the Christ." (Matthew 23:7-12).
