A ransom is the price paid to secure the release of a prisoner.
The word is used in this sense in Psalm 49:7-8: "No man
can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for
him-the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough".
In the Old Testament the Hebrew word for 'ransom' is usually
translated 'atonement'. The translators may have preferred
to use the word atonement rather than ransom to avoid the
suggestion that the forgiveness of sins could be bought for
money.
The original Hebrew meaning of the word is 'a covering' by
which sins were hidden or covered, and the atonement was linked
with animal sacrifices and other offerings. The idea of a
covering for sins may come from the skins God provided as
clothing for Adam and Eve after they had sinned.
In the New Testament the Greek word is translated 'ransom'
in three places meaning the 'price to be paid' and in the
context refers to the death of the Lord Jesus as the ransom
price: "God our Savior
wants all men to be saved
and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one
God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
who gave himself as a ransom for all men." (1 Timothy
2:3-6).
The death of the Lord Jesus is the ransom price paid for our
release from the otherwise inevitable prospect of death.
