Capital City of the First Century World.
Rome was the chief city of the Roman Empire. We first read
about Rome in the book of the Acts. The apostle Paul, was
himself a Roman citizen, although he was born in a provincial
city, Tarsus, and lived in Israel. He was taken to Rome after
he had preached the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the
Roman Empire. He was finally arrested and tried for treason,
and executed there.
A church was established at Rome, to which Paul addresses
the letter known as the Book of Romans. After the writing
of the New Testament was completed, the armies of Rome besieged
and destroyed the city of Jerusalem, and the church established
there was scattered into the surrounding countries. This dispersion
helped the spread of the gospel away from Jerusalem and into
the wider Roman Empire. The Roman authorities became concerned
at the influence of the new church and Christians were persecuted
everywhere. Later, Rome assumed the leadership of the Christian
Church; Christianity lost its initial purity of belief and
practice, as it then merged with the state of Rome.
The Book of Revelation describes a world-wide power which
deceives the nations of the world (see ch.18:23) and throughout
the ages has persecuted the true Church of God (see ch.18:24),
and has corrupted the earth (see ch.19:2), and which is to
be finally destroyed by Christ at his return (see ch.18:8-10).
This power is named as 'Babylon the Great' (see ch.18:2).
The old city of Babylon no longer existed at the time the
Revelation was given. 'Babylon' is therefore a code name for
a similar power having the same world wide influence for evil,
which students of Bible prophecy have had no hesitation in
identifying as imperial and papal Rome and those who sympathise
with and support her.
