Reconciliation is to reach an understanding and agreement
with those from whom we formerly differed-particularly with
God. In the Old Testament the word translated as 'reconciliation'
is from an original Hebrew word meaning a 'covering'. It is
also translated 'atonement'. (See also RANSOM). The killing
of the animal was an acknowledgement by the offerer that,
as a sinner, he would die, and that he lived only by God's
grace towards him. By making this acknowledgement a man was
reconciled to God (see Leviticus ch.16).
In the New Testament the Greek word translated as 'reconciliation',
means to make a complete change, and refers to the change
of heart and mind which we make when we turn from 'idols'
to serve the living God. As Christians we are reconciled to
God by His word (see 2 Corinthians 5:18-19).
Note:
Where the KJV in the Old Testament has 'reconciliation', the
NIV changes this word to 'atonement'. The meaning is the same.
