Apologising to God and Making a New Start.
In the Old Testament it is frequently God who 'repents' or
changes His mind about the punishment He is about to bring
upon His people (see Amos ch.7; Zechariah 8:14; Jeremiah 18:8).
Perhaps the word relent more accurately describes God's intentions.
But Israel also is called upon to repent and turn away from
idols, and they will be forgiven (see Ezekiel 18:30-32).
The message of John the Baptist and Jesus was for all men
to repent and they would be forgiven (see Matthew 3:1-4; 4:17).
The reason people were encouraged to repent was that the kingdom
of God was near, and that the unrepentant would be excluded
from the kingdom (see Matthew 25:1-13). Repentance was to
be shown by a change of heart and life style, and by submitting
to baptism, which in symbol indicated death to the old life
of sin and rising to start a new life in Christ (see Matthew
3:5-6).
"Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each
one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent!
Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your
downfall." (Ezekiel 18:30).
