Day
and night are the natural divisions of time made by the rotation
of the earth on its own axis. In the Bible, day and night
also have a symbolic meaning. Night is the time when men sleep,
when evil deeds can be hidden-when the righteous struggle
and only survive with God's help. While Jesus was in the earth
with his disciples the glorious light of God shined forth
is his person and it was, for a brief time, day. When he was
crucified night closed in on the human race (see John 9:4;
Luke 1:78). Night will have an end and the day will come when
Jesus returns.
"But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this
day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of
the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night
or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who
are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled."
(1 Thessalonians 5:4-6; see also Romans 13:12; 2 Peter 1:19).
"Sing to the Lord, you saints of His; praise His holy
Name.
For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the
morning." (Psalm 30:4-5).
At the end of time the complete abolition of sin and death
will bring the final end to night and the beginning of perpetual
day in God's presence.
"They will see His face, and His name will be on their
foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need
the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord
God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and
ever." (Revelation 22:4-5).
