To
forgive is to pardon an offence, not to resent an injury,
and not to insist on the repayment of a debt. It implies that
the offender is repentant, and that the offence is then forgotten.
God, and Jesus Christ, by his God-given authority, can forgive
sins (see Luke 5:21). God's forgiveness is unlimited (see
1 John 1:9), but it is given on condition:
(i) that we are sincere in our repentance, and
(ii) that we forgive those who have hurt us in any way (see
Matthew 18:35; Mark 11:25,26).
This is made clear in the Lord's Prayer: "Forgive us
our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us."
(Luke 11:4).
"If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents,
forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day,
and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive
him." (Luke 17:3-4).
God will do the same for us.
