Charity is an old English word, which has changed its meaning.
The original meaning, to be found in the KJV (for example
in 1 Corinthians 13), was love displayed towards fellow men
and women.
In recent times the meaning has been narrowed down to helping
the poor with material benefits, which is only one aspect
of what the word charity originally meant.
"Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell
your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure
in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" (Matthew 19:21).
