Communion is a gathering of like-minded people wishing to
celebrate the faith they share. It also refers to the things
they understand and do together. The word is found in the
King James Version, but not in all other versions, and then
only in Paul's letters to the church at Corinth. In the NIV
it is replaced with "participation in" (1 Corinthians
10:16); "to have in common"; "to have fellowship
with" (2 Corinthians 6:14). The Greek word koinonia from
which it is taken has the much wider meaning of fellowship
(q.v.).
Communion is also the name given by some people to the 'Breaking
of Bread' (q.v.), the memorial supper instituted by Christ
for his followers. It means literally, 'the act of using a
thing together, or in common'. It is taken from Paul's words
to the Corinthians: "The cup of blessing which we bless,
is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread
which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are
all partakers of that one bread." (1 Corinthians 10:16-17,
KJV).
