This is the New Testament Greek form of the name of The Lord
Jesus Christ. In the Hebrew, his name means 'The Salvation
of the Lord'. A similar name was given to Joshua the Old Testament
leader of Israel who succeeded Moses, and who led God's people
Israel into the Promised Land of Canaan.
God, through the angel Gabriel, told Mary, the mother of Jesus,
to give this name to her son: "You will be with child
and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name
Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the
Most High." (Luke 1:31-32).
"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him
the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their
sins." (Matthew 1:21).
