ALMIGHTY GOD
A

In the early books of the Old Testament, God is known in the Hebrew as Shaddai which perhaps means fruitfulness, blessing, or strength (might). Other authorities say it is from a word meaning 'mountain'. When prefixed by El it becomes 'El Shaddai' or 'Almighty God'.

"…the Lord appeared to him [Abram], and said, 'I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.'" (Genesis 17:1).

In the later books of the Old Testament the name seems more likely to be related to the word shadad which means to 'destroy' or to 'judge'-to enforce the sentence of the court-and this is how God features in those prophetic writings which are warnings to Israel and the surrounding nations to repent: "Alas for that day! For the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty." (Joel 1:15).

In the New Testament the Greek translation similarly means 'all powerful'.
