Is mentioned in the New Testament, and it is different from
water baptism. In each case described, with one exception,
it refers to the giving of the Holy Spirit to the assembled
disciples at Pentecost, marking the commencement of the evangelistic
work of the new Christian Church.
"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me
will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I
am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and with fire." (Matthew 3:11; see also Mark 1:8; Luke
3:16; John 1:33).
"On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he [Jesus]
gave them this command: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but to wait
for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak
about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'" (Acts 1:4-5).
"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together
in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent
wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they
were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues
as the Spirit enabled them." (Acts 2:1-2).
This event marked the beginning of the work of the Church,
and the Holy Spirit came upon those who had already been baptised
with water, just as the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus after
he had been baptised. On a later occasion the Holy Spirit
was given to the family and friends of Cornelius the Roman
centurion, a converted gentile community, marking the beginning
of the work of the Church among the Gentiles. In their case
the Holy Spirit came on them before they had been baptised,
but Peter immediately emphasises the essential nature of baptism
in water, by saying:
"Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with
water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.
So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ."
(Acts 10:47-48).
