Chosen.
The relevant Hebrew and Greek words in the Bible are sometimes
translated 'the elect', 'the election' and elsewhere 'the
chosen'. The meaning is the same. Jesus Christ is God's "chosen
one" (Isaiah 42:1) and "a chosen cornerstone"
in God's spiritual Temple or house (1 Peter 2:6).
In the Old Testament it is God's people Israel, who are "the
elect" or "chosen people" and Peter and Paul
in their letters refer to their Jewish brothers in the same
way (see 2 Timothy 3:10; 1 Peter 1:1). In the Gospels it is
the faithful from among Israel who are chosen in the sense
of being selected out of Israel (see Matthew 24:22,24,31).
But as the gospel spreads to the Gentile world, it is the
faithful from among all nations who hear and obey the word
of God, who are the Elect or Chosen (see Luke 18:7; Romans
8:33).
There are two unusual uses of the word 'elect': Paul writes
to Timothy about "the elect angels" (1 Timothy 5:21),
meaning the appointed or chosen elders of the church, and
John addresses his second letter to "the elect lady
whom
I love in the truth." (2 John :1, KJV). He may be writing
to a faithful sister in Christ, or perhaps it is the way he
thinks of the Church as the mother of his spiritual family.
(See ANGELS).
"Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make
your calling and election sure. For if you do these things,
you will never fall." (2 Peter 1:10).
