The Creator and Sustainer of the Universe.
Elohim is the Hebrew word for 'god', or 'God' when the God
of Israel is referred to. The plural form indicates majesty
and respect (like the royal 'we' in English!).
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our GOD, the LORD is one."
(Deuteronomy 6:4).
When angels represent God, they are sometimes referred to
by that title (compare Genesis 32:24-30 with Hosea 12:2-4).
Elohim is occasionally used for those men who represented
the authority of God in the nation of Israel. For example,
"Thou shalt not revile the gods." (Exodus 22:28,
KJV). The NIV margin has "Do not revile the judges".
Similarly Psalm 82:1: "God presides in the great assembly;
He gives judgment among the "gods". (i.e. the rulers
of Israel). Jesus quoted this psalm to the Jews who accused
him of blasphemy because he said he was God's son: "Is
it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods [elohim]'?.
If He called them "gods", to whom the word of God
came-and the Scripture cannot be broken-what about the one
whom the Father set apart as His very own and sent into the
world?" (John 10:34-36).
