Most ancient peoples believed that the heart and other internal organs of the body were the source of our feelings and emotions, whereas the head or the mind produced our thoughts. Even today, we speak of having a 'broken heart' when we are very sad. Except where a physical heart is spoken of, this is the way in which 'heart' is used in the Bible.

The heart can be 'glad' (see Exodus 4:14); hearts can be 'hardened' (see Exodus 4:21); be 'wise' (see Exodus 31:6, KJV); or be 'willing' (see Exodus 35:5, KJV). A heart can 'tremble' (see Deuteronomy 28:65, KJV); or be 'merry' (see Judges 16:25, KJV). Hearts can 'die' (see 1 Samuel 25:37, KJV). God can put things in our heart (see Nehemiah 2:12); hearts can 'meditate' and be 'broken' (see Psalms 34:18), and so on.

"'This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after that time,' declares the Lord. 'I will put My law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be My people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, "Know the Lord," because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.'" (Jeremiah 31:33-34).
