Words are the expression of our thoughts. Men's words are
of little value, and can do much harm and be dangerous (see
James 3:1-12). But if our thoughts are guided by God's wisdom,
then our words will be useful and powerful. They will be God's
words, not our own. In the Old Testament it was always "the
word of the Lord" through Moses and the prophets which
guided Israel, although they seldom listened (see Deuteronomy
1:1-6; 2:2; 6:1; Isaiah 1:10; 8:1; 22:15).
In the introduction to John's Gospel, Jesus is given the title
'The Word of God' because he came to reveal the purpose of
God to Mankind (see John 1:1-5; 14).
The purpose of God is the redemption of men and women through
Jesus Christ, who is the word of God. This word is given to
all men and women in the Gospel writings and the inspired
statements of the apostles in their letters. Both Jesus and
the apostles explain that the restored kingdom of God promised
to Israel in the Old Testament is now accessible to people
of all nations, through faith in Christ.
"Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message
is heard through the word of Christ [KJV: "the word of
God"].
Their voice has gone out into all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world." (Romans 10:17-18).
