Work is using God-given energy and skill to make or do something.
God's greatest work is His continuing creation (see Genesis
2:2). Man, like His Creator, is encouraged to work. God also
understands that regular rest is necessary, so the Sabbath-the
seventh day-was also commanded to be a day of rest (see Exodus
20:9). Work which is honest and true is commendable to God,
but all evil works are condemned.
Work for God brings present satisfaction, but in itself, no
lasting reward. It is essential as evidence of our faith in
God: "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action
[work], is dead." (James 2:17).
"I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth
in me, he doeth the works.
He that believeth on me,
the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than
these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." (John
14:10,12, KJV).
The "greater works" that we shall do are a reference
to the time when we, if we are found worthy of such honour,
will be working with Christ in God's kingdom.
