(1) Given to Israel by God through Moses.
When Moses brought God's people Israel out of Egypt, God gave
them a law to control their lives. Apart from regulations
governing practical relations with each other, the Law gave
instructions for the establishment of a priesthood, with the
help of which Israel were to worship God according to an annual
programme of gatherings, feasts, sacrifices and offerings.
The Law regulated diet, hygiene, health and personal relationships.
It imposed a strict moral code covering every aspect of life.
Moses told Israel: "See, I have taught you decrees and
laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow
them in the land you are entering to take possession of it.
Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and
understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these
decrees and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding
people.' What other nation is so great as to have their gods
near them the way the Lord our God is near us when we pray
to Him? And what other nation is so great as to have such
righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting
before you today?" (Deuteronomy 4:5-8).
The Jewish Christians of the first century were slow to realise
that the love of Christ had replaced subjection to the Law
of Moses. Much of the writing of the apostle Paul is to change
Jewish loyalty from Moses to Christ.
"Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto
Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that
faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For
ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."
(Galatians 3:24-26, KJV).
