Light comes to the inhabitants of the earth by the radiance
of the sun. When it is dark, we have the reflected light of
the moon and stars, or we make use of the resources of the
earth to make artificial light for ourselves. Frequently the
Bible uses 'light' in the sense of enlightenment-when we understand
God.
"In the heavens He [God] has pitched a tent for the sun,
which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one
end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing
is hidden from its heat
. The commands of the Lord are
radiant, giving light to the eyes." (Psalm 19:4-8).
"The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of
dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But
the way of the wicked is like deep darkness, they do not know
what makes them stumble." (Proverbs 4:18-19).
In the gospel Jesus Christ brought the light of God to all
men and women. "He [John the Baptist] came as a witness
to testify concerning that light [Jesus Christ], so that through
him all men might believe
. The true light that gives
light to every man was coming into the world." (John
1:7-9).
The duty of bearing the light before men passes to all Christians.
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot
be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under
a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light
to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light
shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise
your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16).
The Book of Revelation speaks of the world in the future:
"There will be no more night. They will not need the
light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God
will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever."
(Revelation 22:5).
This is a poetical way of saying that the whole world will
be enlightened by the knowledge of God's ways, as the prophet
Isaiah foretold: "They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the
knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." (Isaiah
11:9).
