A Title for a Divine Ruler.
God is addressed by His people using several different names,
to which He has given particular significance for their instruction
and comfort. In the Old Testament the two words most frequently
used for God, after Elohim (q.v.) and other derivatives of
El, are 'YAHWEH' (Jehovah), and Adonai. In most translations
of the Bible these two names appear as 'LORD' in capital letters
for Yahweh, and 'Lord' in small letters for Adonai, and to
the casual reader the significance of the names is entirely
lost. Jews read Adonai for YHWH. (See JEHOVAH).
Adoni, the singular form of the word, is used to address humans
in authority, for example Genesis 24:18, where Abraham's steward
is addressed as 'My Lord' and Genesis 43:20, where Joseph's
steward is addressed as 'Sir.'
In the New Testament the Greek word Kurios meaning 'Lord'
or 'Master' is used to name not only God and Jesus Christ,
but angels and humans in authority, as 'Lord' (Matthew 1:20;
18:25; Mark 1:3) 'Master' (John 3:10 [NIV: "teacher"];
Matthew 6:24) or 'Sir', (Matthew 13:27; John 4:11).
