The
New Testament contains letters written by the apostle Paul
to the churches at Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colosse
and Thessalonika, and personal letters to Timothy, Titus and
Philemon. There is also a general letter to 'the Hebrews'
who are thought to be those Jewish Christians who were scattered
after the persecution in Jerusalem following the death of
Stephen. Its author is unknown, but is generally considered
to be Paul. The apostles John, James, Peter and Jude also
wrote general letters. The Book of Revelation begins with
letters from Jesus Christ from heaven, conveyed by the apostle
John, to the seven churches of Asia. These letters were solemn
warnings against laxity and falling away.
All these letters contain, as well as pastoral greetings and
some personal communications, explanations of Christian teaching
and advice on Christian living which are as important for
us today as they were for the first century Christians.
