In English a martyr is a person who has been put to death
for his Christian faith, and the word is so used where the
apostle Paul says: "Lord
these men know that I
went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those
who believe in you. And when the blood of your martyr Stephen
was shed, I stood there giving my approval
." (Acts
22:19-20).
But the present meaning of the word has changed from the original
Greek word martur which means a 'witness', and it is so translated
in, for example, Revelation "You did not renounce your
faith in me, even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,
who was put to death in your city
." (Revelation
2:13).
