Mercy, in the hands of a righteous and loving God, is to withhold
deserved punishment from repentant sinners, and to help and
encourage all those who are determined to serve Him more faithfully.
David prays: "Have mercy on me O God, according to your
unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out
my transgressions." (Psalm 51:1).
Those who like God are merciful to their fellow men and women
will receive the same treatment from Him: "Blessed are
the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." (Matthew
5:7).
Note:
In many places where the KJV has 'mercy' or 'merciful' the
NIV uses 'love' or 'loving kindness'.
