A Demonstration of God's Supernatural Power.
In modern English versions the original Hebrew and Greek words
are more usually translated 'sign'. A miracle is a supernatural
happening brought about by God to demonstrate that He is speaking
through, or giving His authority to, His servants, the prophets
and apostles.
Moses and Aaron performed miracles (also referred to as 'signs
and wonders') before Pharoah to convince him that God required
him to release Israel from slavery in Egypt (see Numbers 14:22).
Later when Israel was established as a kingdom, God sent prophets,
notably Elijah and Elisha, to warn and guide His people. They
also had the ability to work miracles which they used to demonstrate
that God was still powerful, and that the idols of the surrounding
nations were nothing. The activities of Elijah and Elisha
are recorded in the two Books of the Kings.
Jesus and the apostles were also able to work miracles to
establish that God was working with them (see John 3:2; Acts
15:12; 1 Corinthians 12:28), and that the message of the gospel
was from God.
