This Earth Cleansed and Restored.
Paradise is a Greek word having a Hebrew and ultimately a
Persian origin. It means a park or garden, ground cultivated
for pleasure. In the Old Testament it is used by Solomon to
describe an orchard (see Ecclesiastes 2:5; Song of Solomon
4:13), and by Nehemiah to describe the royal forest of the
king Artaxerxes, when he wanted cedar trees cut down for timber
to repair the gates of Jerusalem (in Nehemiah 2:8).
The Garden of Eden is called a 'garden', but it could have
been named a 'paradise'. The English poet Milton wrote a book
about the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden, which he called
Paradise Lost.
