2. Pagan priests
The pagan nations surrounding Israel all had their 'priests'
who led the worship of the local idols (see Deuteronomy 4:15-31;
1 Kings ch.18; 2 Kings 17:29-33).
They were usually rich and influential because they could
deceive kings and people with their human skills or magic.
They presided over many abominable practices, such as human
sacrifices and ritual prostitution, which God could not tolerate.
This was one reason why God brought Israel away from the abominations
of Egypt, and into the land of Canaan, to destroy the Canaanite
people, whose ways God found abhorrent (see Genesis 47:20-22;
Numbers chs.22,25; Deuteronomy 18:9-13).
