Man's Representative Before God.

A priest represents his fellow men and women before God, encouraging them to faithfulness, presenting their offerings, and teaching them God's ways. In earliest times, it seems from our reading of the Bible, the head of the household often represented the family before God (see Genesis 18:19; Job 1:4-5; 42:8).

There were others such as Jethro, and Melchizedek, who were priests and may have had a different appointment. There are few details as to how the early priests carried out their duties.
