All who obey God are His servants (see Psalm 105), and this
is particularly true of the Lord Jesus Christ (see Isaiah
42:1; Matthew 12:17-21). "I am among you as one who serves."
(Luke 22:27).
Paul tells us that we were 'slaves' or 'servants' to sin,
but we have been redeemed, or bought back again by God to
be His servants. From being servants, God will make us His
sons and heirs by adoption (see Galatians 4:1-7).
We are offered the choice of serv ing God or serving sin,
which is another way of saying 'pleasing ourselves'. We cannot
do both. "No one can serve two masters" (Matthew
6:24). When Jesus was tempted to do wrong, we read that in
reply to the tempter "Jesus said to him, 'Away from me,
Satan! For it is written: "Worship the Lord your God,
and serve Him only."'" (Matthew 4:10).
The apostle Paul told the Romans: "For we know that our
old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might
be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to [KJV:
"serve"] sin." (Romans 6:6).
Faithful servants will be rewarded: "Well done, good
and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things;
I will put you in charge of many things! Come and share your
Master's happiness!" (Matthew 25:21).
