In Bible lands the shepherd was a familiar sight. The life
and work of the shepherd illustrates the constant loving care
that God has for us, and teaches us that we should have the
same care for others. So David could say, "The Lord is
my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1, KJV).
Jesus compares Himself to a shepherd, and contrasts the lack
of care shown by the hired shepherd with the love Jesus has
for his own sheep, even giving his own life to secure their
safety: "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and
my sheep know me-just as the Father knows me and I know the
Father-and I lay down my life for the sheep."(John 10:14-15).
